MTN Amashova ClassicTelecommunications giant MTN has thrown its weight behind one of the toughest and most gruelling cycling events, now known as the MTN Amashovashova National Cycle Classic.

This 106 kilometres-long race, which takes place from 17th to 18th October 2009, starts in Pietermaritzburg and ends in Durban at the Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World on the North Beach.

Anthony Garstang, senior manager for sponsorship at MTN SA says: “MTN is already involved in cycling and this re-affirms our commitment in the sport of cycling and we encourage all members of the family to take part in the event. We have come on board to contribute to an initiative that already boasts a rich and colourful history spanning more than two decades.”

Race organiser Annie Batchelder said she was excited about the 2009 event and looking forward to record entries across all categories.

“Having MTN as a partner is a huge boost for the event which is now its 23rd year making it one of the most enduring cycling events in South Africa. Known as KZN’s safest race the Amashova enjoys full support from the various Durban city departments that make full road closure possible” she said. “We look forward to another thrilling cycle classic that brings thousands of cycling enthusiasts to our beautiful city.”

MTN’s association with cycling provides an opportunity to interact with cycling corporate, participants, and fans alike in order to strengthen its contribution to the market where it operates.

Garstang adds: “This is one of various programmes through which the MTN Amashova National Cycle Classic is able to plough back into the communities that are along the route of the race.”

As development resonates in virtually most, if not all initiatives that MTN is involved in, the MTN Amashova National Cycle Classic is involved in the development of the sport as well. Through the eThembeni Road Safety Bike Park, physically disabled and visually impaired children benefit from a life skills programme.

The City of Durban is proud to be a host and co-sponsor of the MTN Amashova Classic.

"Cycling is a popular sport in Durban and as Africa's Sports Capital we welcome events such as the Amashova that allow us to showcase our abilities," says Mayor Obed Mlaba.

Additional information about the race:
  • And adding another dimension to the event is the MTN Asishove mountain bike challenges which this year will take place at Midmar Dam on Saturday, October 17 over distances of 10km, 35km and 70km;
  • To ensure that children are not left out, the MTN Minishova in Durban 1km (3-6 years old) and 5km (7-11years old) events for children takes place at Suncoast on Saturday, October 10 – a week before the main event.
